Email Authentication and Anti-Spam Compliance

In early 2024, major email providers including Gmail and Yahoo started implementing policy changes to increase the safety and security of emails sent to their users. These changes entail making some simple but important updates to your domain name. Specifically, there are three records required: SPF, DKIM, and DMARC

To get started, dmarcian provides a tool you can use to verify if your domain complies with these new policies. You can find that tool at https://dmarcian.com/domain-checker/ - simply enter your email domain, ("example.com" if your email address is user@example.org), and press the "Check Domain" button. If you get three green checkmarks, you're already configured properly, and no further action is needed. Otherwise, it is recommended that you correct any errors found to ensure your emails continue to deliver to your clients successfully as well as to reduce the ability of a bad actor to fraudulently spoof your domain.

DMARCLY has a great article covering, in extensive detail, the purpose of each of these records and how to use them. You can find that article here. You can also click here to skip directly to the setup instructions.

To make these changes, you'll need access to the account where your domain is registered and some information from your email provider which can typically be obtained from their admin interface or by reaching out to their support team.
